Commutative

Two elements $x$ and $y$ of a set $S$ are said to be commutative under a binary operation $*$ if they satisfy

\begin{displaymath}
x*y = y*x.
\end{displaymath}

Real numbers are commutative under addition

\begin{displaymath}
x+y = y+x
\end{displaymath}

and multiplication

\begin{displaymath}
x\cdot y = y\cdot x.
\end{displaymath}
