Historical Note

The first fencing match involving MSU occurred in 1895 at a M.I.A.A. Field Day. The sport would not appear again on campus until the early 1920’s, when Egyptian student Joseph Waffa and instructor Omar M. Lebel organized the first MSU Fencing Club. In 1926, the fencing team competed against other intercollegiate institution defeating Michigan, 10-6. Fencing would remain a minor sport at MSU until 1931 when it achieved varsity status. Fencing remained a varsity sport until 1997, but MSU students still compete in fencing as a club sport.
