Historical Note

Mary Chase Stratton and Horace Caulkins (developer of the Revelation Kiln), founded Pewabic Pottery in 1903 in Detroit at the height of the Arts & Crafts movement in America. They produced highly respected vessels, tiles, and ornamentation. In 1961 Mary Chase Stratton died and Pewabic Pottery was run by her former assistant. In 1966, ownership was transferred to Michigan State University, which operated the Pottery as part of its continuing education program until 1976. From 1976 to 1981 Pewabic Pottery reported to the University Extension Program. In 1979, the Pewabic Society, a non-profit organization, was established to administer the Pottery's operation. In 1981 Pottery ownership was transferred to the Society, whose board of trustees continues to serve as the Pottery's governing body. (Historical information from the Pewabic Pottery website)
