Historical Note
Highway Traffic Safety Programs, begun in 1956 as the Highway Traffic Safety Center, has reported to Lifelong Education Programs since 1959. From 1961 to 1963, it was operated on a much reduced scale (due to lack of funding), and it went under the name Traffic Safety Program. During 1963-1964, its title was Traffic Center Program. In 1963, the Governor approved state funding, and in 1964, the Highway Traffic Safety Center was reestablished. In 1981, the title was again changed, this time to Highway Traffic Safety Programs.
Scope and Contents note
The Highway Traffic Safety Programs records include reports, booklets, magazines, correspondence, and news releases pertaining to driver education, highway improvements, and highway safety programs including vehicle inspection and breathalyzer use.
The collection also includes published (1956-57) and unpublished (1956-1970) annual reports and serial #193, MSU Center Letter.
