Historical Note
The Office of International Extension was created in 1965 and reported to University Public Services under the auspices of the Continuing Education Service. (It was previously named the World Affairs Office.) Sheldon Cherney was the first director. The office had broad responsibility for furthering the learning of adults in international affairs. Activities of the office included special conferences and seminars designed to meet the international concerns of the people of Michigan, the campus Peace Corps office, MSU/University of Nigeria Student Exchange Program (MINEX), the American Language and Educational Center (AMLEC), world affairs citizen education, training programs for individuals going overseas, and a special Master’s program for overseas teachers. Additionally, overseas study programs were offered in cooperation with the academic departments and implemented through the Office of Overseas Study. In 1979, the Office of International Extension began reporting to Lifelong Education Programs.
Scope and Contents note
International Extension records consist of a six-month report on the Michigan State University/Peace Corps Master's in Education program in Nigeria, directories of International Academic Interests and Experience, publications on the office's activities and functions, brochures, handbooks and newsletters. Also included are annual reports and serials.
