Historical Note
In January 1988, Michigan State University Provost David Scott appointed the Semester Study Group to study the problem of converting from an academic quarter schedule to a semester schedule. The group released its Semester Study Group Report in January 1989, in which they recommended switching to the semester system. The Academic Council approved the conversion in 1989, but the Academic Senate voted against conversion at a meeting on June 6, 1989. Following a report by the Calendar Issues Clarification Committee which recommended conversion, the Council and the Senate both voted to approve conversion. On December 1, 1989, the Board of Trustees adopted the recommendation that MSU switch to a semester schedule effective fall 1992. The transition process was run by the Semester Transition Team 1992, or SETT92. SETT92 was led by Dr. Bruce Miller. Among other activities, SETT92 published The Green Book to aid faculty, staff, and students in making the adjustment to the semester schedule.
Scope and Contents note
The Semester Transition Team 1992 collection consists of five folders. The first folder contains an Adviser Handbook issued by SETT92 in 1990. The second folder holds correspondence, from 1989, considering the decision to switch to the semester schedule. The third folder contains correspondence, from 1990, concerning the transition process itself. The fourth folder contains copies of the Semester Study Group Report from 1989. The fifth folder holds six issues of the Transition newsletter issued by SETT92. The newsletters run from December 1990 to May 1992.
