Biographical Note
Lee Roy Schoenmann was born on January 13, 1889, in Plain, Wisconsin. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1911. He held numerous government posts including director of the land economic survey in the Michigan Department of Conservation (1925-1933), director of conservation work in the Michigan Civilian Conservation Corps (1933-1934), regional director of the federal submarginal land program, and supervisor of land classification for the Tennessee Valley Authority (1935-1936). In 1937, Schoenmann joined the faculty at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) as Director of the Conservation Institute. This institute was established to work with other departments for training, research, and extension work in the field of conservation. Schoenmann was appointed head of the Department of Land and Water Conservation in the Division of Conservation on July 1, 1950. He held this position until his death in April 1952.
