Biographical Note
Verdun Erle Leichty was born on May 1, 1905 in Joliet, Illinois. He earned his A.B. (1928) from Alma College and his M.A. (1938) and Ph.D. (1943) from the University of Michigan. He was the assistant director of correspondence study in the extension department at the University of Michigan before joining the English department faculty at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1939. Leichty was the recipient of numerous fellowships to teach abroad in Mexico, Vietnam and Nicaragua during his tenure at MSU. His wife, Mary, was on the faculty of the Psychology department and worked in the Counseling Center at MSU. Leichty retired from MSU in 1970. He died in 1983.
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains correspondence about the development of a Workers Education program. Leichty worked as the assistant director of correspondence study in the extension department at the University of Michigan and later developed a similar program at Michigan State University.
