Biographical Note
Evelyn H. Scholl joined the staff of Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in October 1937. Scholl earned her B.A. (1920), M.A. (1923) and Ph.D. (1935) from the University of Michigan. She also studied French at Western Reserve University.
Before coming to MSC, Scholl was a teaching assistant at Smith College from 1920-1922; head of the English department at Port Huron Junior College from 1923-1924; an instructor in English at the University of Rochester from 1926-1930; the head of the English department at Cleveland Institute of Music from 1930-1933; and the head of the English department at Hanover College from 1935-1937. Scholl’s first position at MSC was instructor of English. In July 1945, she was promoted to assistant professor and, in July 1951, to associate professor. Scholl was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Le Cercle Francais, Modern Language Association, Midwest Renaissance Group, Shakespeare Association, Michigan Linguistic Society, and American Association of University Professors. Evelyn H. Scholl retired from her position as associate professor on July 1, 1964. She passed away April 28, 1983.
Scope and Contents note
The Evelyn Scholl papers consist of correspondence, artwork, publications, cards, a thesis, notebook, a photo album of scenes around the Michigan State University campus, and scrapbook pages.
Scholl’s correspondence files contain letters to her from her colleagues and friends, Paul Nordoff and Walter Quirt. Nordoff’s letters were received between 1940 and 1955, Quirt’s between 1947 and 1968. In addition to his letters, Scholl also received artwork by Quirt and publications promoting that work.
The scrapbook pages contain programs for various plays and music programs, newspaper clippings about events related to MSU and its students, and some pictures.
