Biographical Note

William F. Riley, Jr. was born on May 24, 1914 in Torrington, Connecticut. He received his B.V.Sc degree from Ontario Veterinary College in 1937, his D.V.M degree from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1938, and an M.S. degree, also from MSC, in 1951.

Riley joined the faculty at Michigan State in September 1938 as an instructor in the Veterinary Surgery and Medicine department. In 1946, he was promoted to assistant profressor, associate professor in 1949 and professor in 1955.

From 1955-1965, he served as the Director of the Equine Clinic and from 1965-1970, he was Director of the Large Animal Clinic. In July 1976, he was appointed acting Chairman of the Large Animal Surgery and Medicine department and then served as Chairman from 1976-1978. Riley retired in July 1979.

In addition to his career at MSU, Riley served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps in World War II from January 1942 to August 1946. Afterwards, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired with the rank of Colonel in 1969. Riley passed away in 1979.

Scope and Contents note

The William F. Riley, Jr. papers consist of his personal notebook of veterinary remedies for horses, cattle, and pigs. The remedies are descriptions or recipes for the treatments. Many list the sources and date of the information. The dates for the citations are 1932-1963.
