Biographical/Historical

Henry S. Leonard was born on December 19, 1905 in West Newton, Massachusets. He received his A.B., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University where he became an instructor. From 1930-1937 he was an instructor at the University of Rochester. He then became an associate professor at Duke University where, in 1942, he was the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Philosophy department. He became chairman of the department in 1949. Leonard came to Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in September 1949 as the chair of the Philosophy department. From 1959-1961 Leonard was a fellow in the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University. In 1961 the MSU Board of Trustees named him University Professor which was given to distinguished scholars of international reputation. He was the third faculty member to receive the title. Leonard passed away on July 11, 1967.
