Biographical/Historical

Carl K. Eicher was born in Newberry, Michigan in 1930. He earned his B.S. (1952) and M.S. (1956) from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. (1961) in Economics from Harvard University. He joined the faculty at Michigan State in 1961 as an assistant professor in the department of agricultural economics. Eicher held a dual appointment with the African Studies Center from 1967-1970. Eicher was assigned to the MSU Nigeria program from 1963 to 1966 and was part of the Consortium for the Study of Nigerian Rural Development the following year. He was promoted to professor in 1970. Eicher conducted research in a dozen African countries and was a leading authority on food and hunger in Africa. Eicher was awarded the MSU Distinguished Faculty Award in 1991 and was named Distinguished Professor in 1992. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2000. Eicher passed away in 2014.
