Biographical/Historical

Louis G. Romano was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1921. He earned his B.S. (1943) from Milwaukee State Teachers College and his M.S. (1948) and Ph.D. (1955) from the University of Wisconsin. He was a teacher and administrator in Shorewood, Wisconsin for 18 years, and superintendent in Wilmette, Illinois for 2 years.

He joined the MSU faculty in September 1966 as an associate professor in Educational Administration and was promoted to professor in 1971. Romano was sent to Okinawa by the U.S. Department of Defense to initiate the Individually Guided Education program. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1991.

Romano published six professional books and over 100 children’s books, including Gertie the Duck. He was the founder of the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators and the National Association of Middle School Educators. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa. Romano passed away in 2013.

Scope and Content

The Louis G. Romano papers contain a letter and a report about the Individually Guided Education program (1970-1974) implemented by the U.S. Department of Defense Schools in Okinawa, Japan. The report includes a description of the program, the teaching staff, photographs as well as information about Okinawa. The final section contains reflections by the principal of the elementary school, Mary H. Muehring.
