Biographical Note
David John Campbell was born on April 4, 1948 in Bristol, England, and grew up in Wales. He received a B.A. in Geography from the University of Bristol U.K in 1969. He earned a A.M. in August 1975, and Ph.D. in 1977 from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Campbell held a Rockefeller Foundation funded visiting research fellow position at the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi, Kenya from 1976 to 1979.
Campbell became a faculty member at Michigan State University in 1979, teaching geography and African studies. From 2000 to 2007, he served as the Association Dean for Research in the College of Social Science. He conducted research on and lived in several African countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, and Cameroon.
Campbell died on May 16, 2013.
Scope and Contents note
The David J. Campbell faculty papers contain research material, lectures and class material, maps, and articles written by Campbell. The material centers around Africa and the Kajiado, land use, desertification, semi-arid land, Sahei Niger, Cameroon, and Rwanda/Burundi.
The materials in the series A.2014.0028 were minimally processed. Folder titles in brackets were created by the archivist who inventoried the materials, and are based on the folder contents. All other titles are original to the folders. It should also be noted that the materials may not relate to the subseries they are under.
