Biographical/Historical
Gordon R. Schlubatis was born on March 22, 1902, and died on May 17, 1984. Gordon Schlubatis was a Michigan State Univerity Agriculture Extension agent. Schlubatis was born and raised in Battle Creek, Michigan. He attended Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University), where he graduated in 1924. On August 11, 1926, Gordon married Harriet (Holden) Schlubatis. The couple moved to Branch County in 1929, where Gordon became a county extension agent. They had three children: Willard, Joyce, and Sybil. Schlubatis started the Branch County Fair. U.S. President Harry Truman appointed him to the Four Point Program in 1952 and Schlubatis traveled to India promoting agriculture. He traveled to Kenya in 1956 and spent four additional years in Ankara, Turkey. Schlubatis belonged to many associations including Michigan State Alumni, Michigan State Retired Alumni, Michigan Horticultural Society, Coldwater Grange, Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Retirees, Coldwater Rotary, Methodist Church, Alpha Gamma Rho, and Alpha Zeta Honorary.
Scope and Contents note
The collection contains trip reports, correspondence, slides, maps and travel booklets related to Schlubatis' time spent working as an agriculture agent overseas. There are also awards, scrapbooks, and photographs. Also included are materials related to his wife Harriet Schlubatis including awards, a Michigan Normal School yearbook, and a student expense register.
