Historical Note
The Verdehr Trio was formed in 1972 by Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr and Walter Verdher with David Renner or Deborah Moriarty making up the third person. Gary Kirkpatrick joined the trio in 1980. They began commissioning works in 1976.
The mission of the Verdehr Trio, which they call "The Making of a Medium," is to create a repertoire of works that can be performed by a trio of clarinet, violin, and piano. As of 2012, the Trio has commissioned over 200 new pieces from musicians all over the world. In addition, they have also traveled extensively both in the US and abroad to perform their pieces.
As early as the 1940s, Walter Verdehr was collecting musical works from composers in the US. Since that time, the selection has broadened to include pieces from as early as the 18th century, and the purview of the trio has expanded to include a number of pieces which have been commissioned to include orchestra or wind symphonies.
Scope and Content
The Verdehr Trio collections contains musical compositions either written or commissioned by the original members of the trio: Walter Verdehr, Elsa Verdehr, and Silvia Roederer. The pieces in the Verdher Trio Collection include partial handwritten scores, full copies of the score, and individual parts. If there is no written distinction, the folder comprises of a full score. Among the composers represented are Leslie Bassett, William David Brohn, David Diamond, Elena Firsova, Jere Hutcheson, Gian-Carlo Menotti, James Niblock, and Gunther Schuller. A select amount of correspondence is also included between a number of these composers and Walter Verdehr.
The collection also contains show programs, travel schedules, and articles published about Verdehr performances. In addition, a number of domestic and foreign posters are contained in the materials.
Two boxes comprise of audio-visual materials, with tapes 56 - 68 being found separately in box 4167. These tapes include performances, practices, and interviews with the composers. Many of the tapes are of the same performance, from multiple angles around the stage.
