Biographical Note
Born Li Shao Chang in China, Michigan State University Professor Shao Chang Lee was head of the Department of Foreign Studies from 1943 to 1960. Lee was born in Canton, China in 1891. He received degrees from two Chinese Colleges, Canton Christian College and Tsing Hua College, before arriving in the United States. Lee continued his education in the United States receiving an A.B. from Yale in 1917; and an A.M. and a Diploma as a Teacher of Education both from Columbia University in 1918. Lee worked as a professor of Chinese Languages and Literature at the University of Hawaii from 1922 to 1943. During that time, he spent several years as a visiting professor both in China and at the University of California, Berkeley. Lee arrived at Michigan State University in 1943 and was the Head of the Department of Foreign Studies. Lee also served as the Director of the International Center from 1944 to 1952. Lee was a member several organizations including the Royal Asiatic Society, the American Oriental Society, the Hawaii Historical Society, the American Association of University Professors, the Far Eastern Association, the MSU Men’s Club, Pi Gamma Mu, Phi Kappa Phi, and the Yale Club of Michigan. He was the author of many books and articles and wrote entries on Chinese Literature for the Encyclopedia of Literature, 1946. Lee was married to Nora Chi-oi Wong of Canton, China on December 20, 1922. They had one daughter, Sophie.
Scope and Contents note
The Shao Chang Lee papers contain primarily materials relating to courses taught by Lee in the field of Asian Studies. Titles of courses include: The Development of Chinese Culture; A Short Cultural History of China; History of Modern Japanese Thought; and Religious Trends in the Far East. The collection also contains information about the development of the International Center at Michigan State University. There is also biographical information and correspondence.
