Biographical Note

Albert Dee "Bud" Drake was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He was educated in public schools and followed his father's footsteps, working for years in service stations, garages and automotive warehouses. He eventually attended Portland State College, and earned a B.A. (1962) and an M.F.A. (1966) at the University of Oregon. He twice won the Ernest Haycox Prize for fiction. From 1966 to 1991, he taught in the Department of English at Michigan State University where he was cited for his outstanding teaching and rose to the rank of professor. He was the first academic to teach a class in science fiction as literature, and for several years he was the director of the Clarion Science Fiction Workshop. He has received numerous academic and creative grants, including two major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. His fiction, poetry and prose have been widely published in literary quarterlies and popular magazines, including Redbook,  Epoch,  North American Review and  The Best American Short Stories.

Scope and Content

The Albert Drake papers contain poetry anthologies and newsletters of student poetry from Drake's time as a professor at Michigan State University. There are also submissions of artwork and poetry, for Drake's personal publication, The Happiness Holding Tank. The artwork submissions include black, line-drawn, intricate prints as well a one color print. The subjects range from early 1900s-style women with large bonnets and randomly placed eyeballs, to explicit and artful drawings of male and female anatomy. The collection also includes postcards from photographer Richard Olderman and poetry and information about Dave Morice.
