Biographical Note
Arthur Sherbo was born on May 27, 1918 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He received his A.B. from Bowdoin College in 1947 and his M.A. (1948) and Ph.D. (1950) from Columbia University. In 1956, Sherbo was hired as an Associate Professor at Michigan State University. He became a full professor in the Department of English in 1961.
Eighteenth-century English studies was Sherbo’s area of expertise. He published numerous books and over 100 articles, most of which were analyses of English literature. In 1983, Sherbo was presented with the Distinguished Faculty Award. Sherbo retired as a professor emeritus in July 1983, and again in December 1987.
Sherbo was married to Irene Sherbo and had three daughters. He passed away on August 10, 2010 at the age of 92.
Scope and Contents note
This collection consists of Sherbo's galley proofs, page proofs, research materials, documents, drafts, notes, photocopies of his work as an editor, and other materials. Also included is his correspondence from 1957 to 1972, relating to Christopher Smart's Knowledge of Occult Literature (1957), New Essays by Arthur Murphy (1963), Christopher Smart: Scholar of the University (1967), Studies in the Eighteenth Century English Novel (1969), Memoirs and Anecdotes of Samuel Johnson (1974), English Poetic Diction from Chaucer to Wordsworth (1975), John Scott of Amwell (1980), Some Thoughts on the Annotation of Eighteenth-Century Texts (n.d.), Major Thomas Pearson of the East India Company (1985), Letters to Mr. Urban of the Gentleman's Magazine (1997), and many other published articles. Biographical and bibliographical materials are present in the collection.
