Biographical Note

Darlene Clark Hine held the position of John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of History at Michigan State University from 1987 to 2004. She established the Comparative Black History Ph.D. program at MSU. She served on the faculty of Northwestern University from 2004-2016. In August 2016, she was appointed Visiting Hannah Distinguished Professor for the academic year.

Hine is an historian of the African American experience and African American women's history. In 1968 she received a B.A. from Roosevelt University in Chicago and a Ph.D. from Kent State Univeristy in 1975.

Hine has published many books and manuscripts, including Black Victory,  A Question of Manhood, and  Black Women in America.

Scope and Content

The collection contains the lecture "Black women in the Middle West: the Michigan experience," that Hines delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Historical Society of Michigan on October 14, 1988 and the Historical Society published in 1990.
