Biographical/Historical

William Rittenberg received a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1964; a Master's degree in Anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1968; and a Ph.D, in Social Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977. He came to Michigan State University in 1980 as a post doctoral fellow in Medical Anthropology. In 1982 to become an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development in the College of Human Medicine and also taught communication skills to medical residents. In 1987 he became the coordinator of the International Teaching Assistant Program. He retired from MSU in 2002.

Scope and Contents note

The William Rittenberg papers consist of materials relating his time as coordinator of International Teaching Assistant Program at Michigan State University. The papers include the history of the ITA Program, orientation materials including schedules, planning and handbooks for students and faculty. There is also material on the Buddy Program, the Speaking and Listening Class, and the Summer English Program which includes syllabi and curriculum materials. Other materials in the collection includes reports from other sources about international teacher assistants. There is also the report "MSU’s Campus System for International TAs 1986-2002" by William Rittenberg as well as other materials created by Rittenberg.
