Biographical Note
Lawrence Busch received his B.A. in History from Hofstra University, his M.S. and his Ph.D. in Development Sociology from Cornell University. Busch began teaching Sociology at Michigan State University in 1990. During his tenure at MSU, he has been the co-Director of the Center for the Study of Standards in Society (formerly Institute for Food and Agricultural Standards), an Agropolis Foundation Fellow, and the Director of Partnerships for Food Industry Development - Fruits and Vegetables. From September 2008 to February 2011, he was a professor of Standards and Society at the Centre for Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. He was named University Distinguished Professor in 1997.
Scope and Contents note
The Lawrence Busch papers consist of completed surveys given to agricultural scientists as well as the master codebook for the surveys. The surveys include questions about research, relationships to organizations, opinions on criteria for publishing, groups that benefit from research, and opinions on goals of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other organizations. The surveys were used to write the book "Science, Agriculture, and the Politics of Research" with William Lacy. The Current Research Information Service database of the USDA was used to generate a random sample of USDA research grants and included agricultural scientists at Land Grant universities and USDA laboratories.
