Biography
Herbert Allen Tucker was a professor of animal science and physiology at Michigan State University. Employed at MSU from 1962 to 2000, Tucker became the leading expert on mammary biology and lactation in dairy cattle. Tucker earned his B.S. in animal husbandry from the University of Massachusetts in 1958, and M.A and PhD from Rutgers University in animal physiology, in 1960 and 1963 respectively. Active in scientific research, Tucker authored 355 publications and co-authored, “Dairy Cattle: Principles, Practices, Problems, Profits,” which became the most popular college textbook for dairy science. His active work in the field earned him the Sigma Xi Research Award at MSU, MSU’s Distinguished Faculty Award, the Upjohn Physiology Award from the American Dairy Science Association, and the Casida Award for his work in graduate training. H. Allen Tucker died July 15th, 2009 in Lansing, Michigan.
Scope and Contents note
The Herbert Allen Tucker papers consist of personal papers, journal articles written by Tucker, lab procedures, lecture notes, awards, correspondence, photographs, and negatives. Also included are "The Anatomy of the Mammary Gland of Domestic and Laboratory Animals" and "The Physiology and Biochemistry of the Mammary Gland" by Charles W. Turner.
