Biographical Note
Stanley Andrews was born in 1894/1895 near High Point, Missouri, to George and Mattie Andrews.
He served in World War I with the American Expeditionary Forces from October 1917 to May 1919.
He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1921 with his bachelor degree in journalism.
He worked as a reporter and an editor at Missouri newspapers and publications from 1921-1940. In 1943, he served in the U.S. Army as planning adviser of food at Air Force headquarters in North Africa. He later served in Italy and Germany in supervisory positions in food procurement and distribution. He served in the U.S. Army until November 1946.
From 1946 to 1947, he was a consultant on world food problems to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. He was a civilian advisor to the U.S. Army in supervising the procurement, supply and distribution of food for the famed Berlin Airlift.
In 1949, he headed the Office of Foreign Agricultural Relations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He served as the head of the American delegation for the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. He was an administrator of the Technical Cooperation Administration program of the U.S. Department of State prior to coming to Michigan State.
In 1953, he arrived at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) to be the director of the National Project in Agricultural Communications, a project partially funded by the Kellogg Foundation. He held that position until 1960 when he was named consultant to international programs at MSU.
Stanley Andrews was awarded the Legion of Merit as an Army colonel. As a civilian, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for outstanding service to the U.S. Army.
Andrews passed away in 1994.
