Biographical Note

Esther Smith Brown was born May 12, 1923 to Raymond and Mildred Brown Smith of Birmingham, Michigan. She earned her B.S. in Medical Technology (1946), an M.S. in Anatomy (1951) and a Ph.D. in Animal Pathology (1955) from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University).

From 1946 to 1950, she worked as a Bacteriologist for the Michigan Department of Conservation. In 1951, she was hired by MSC as a Bacteriologist, was a Graduate Assistant from 1954 to 1955, an Assistant Professor of Anatomy from 1955 to 1960, and Associate Professor and the Director of School of Medical Technology from 1960 to 1970. She became a full Professor in 1968. She resigned from MSU in 1970.

During the 1970s, she was a professor of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of a short reminiscence of the veterinary medical program and the beginning of the medical biology program at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University). The medical biology program, the first to offer the Bachelor of Science degree in the United States, was later renamed the medical technology program.
