Biographical Note

Ethelbert (Bert) Martin was born in 1910, in Liverpool, England, but grew up near Cobalt, Ontario. He got a B.S.A. in 1933 at the Ontario Agricultural College and worked in the Apiculture Department from 1933 to 1939. He later worked at the Entomology Department at the University of Manitoba from 1939 to 1942. During World War II, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Canadian Navy. Then he was Provincial Apiarist in Manitoba from 1945 to 1950. In September 1950, Martin became the apiculturist in the Entomology Department at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University). He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1957. In April 1961, Martin helped create the science program at the University of Nigeria. In 1975, he retired from MSU to take a job with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Agriculture Research Service and then retired in 1979.

Scope and Contents note

“The Bee and Me” is a narrative story written by Ethelbert (Bert) Martin intended for his children to describe his life and jobs. He also discusses the function of bees and their importance in nature.
