Henry Blosser received all his degrees from the University of Virginia: his B.A in 1951, his M.S. in 1952, and his PhD. in 1954. After receiving his doctorate, he accepted a job at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1954 to 1958. Afterward he came to Michigan State University, where he worked with the cyclotron laboratory, becoming its director from 1958 to 1980. In 1972, Blosser was recognized as a University Distinguished Professor due to his work with the cyclotron. Currently, Blosser is both active at Michigan State University and at Wayne State University with the Department of Radiation Oncology. His field of specialties include Advanced Particle Accelerator Systems, Superconducting Magnets for Cyclotrons and Other Applications, Nuclear Physics Research, and Accelerators for Cancer Therapy.
Scope and Contents note
The papers of Henry Blosser contain six folders of photocopies pertaining to the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). "Important Events in the Evolution of NSCL" (1982) and "Cyclotron Laboratory Michigan State University Project" (1982-1988) outline the history of the department. Also contained in this collection is a contract between Michigan State University and the U.S. Department of Energy, which discusses the additions to the laboratory and costs. A research proposal outlines a study with Harper-Grace Hospitals of neutron treatment on cancerous tumors. There is also correspondence dating from 1958 regarding the hiring of Blosser and the terms of his contract. Finally there is a brochure on the applications of glycol-chemistry such as ethanol fuel and possible disease treatments.
