Biographical Note
Barbara Van Baalen (nee Hanna) was secretary to Stanley Crowe, Dean of Students at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University), from 1944 to 1956, when he retired. Crowe was also the Director of the Summer School and Director of the Lecture-Concert Series, which brought national acts to MSU for performances. As a result of her association with Crowe, Van Baalen was able to get autographs from many of the performers. She started her employment at Michigan State as a stenographer with the Foreign Language department from 1943-1944 and continued work as a secretary until 1980.
Scope and Contents note
This collection consists of clippings on Stanley Crowe, Dean of Students at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) as well as materials related to the Lecture-Concert Series at MSU. Included are performance programs, newspaper clippings about the performances, souvenir programs that were sold at performances and industry magazines featuring performers who appeared at MSU. An alphabetical list and a chronological list of the programs can be found at the end of the finding aid. The collection also includes publicity shots of performers that Van Baalen may have acquired due to her close association with Crowe who booked the performances. The photographs are arranged alphabetically. Some of the photographs are autographed and may have been removed and replaced with a photocopy. A list of people in the file is included at the end of the finding aid.
