Biographical Note
Frank W. Telewski is a professor of plant biology and the curator of the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and Campus Arboretum at Michigan State University. He is currently studying the effect of mechanical stress on the development of biomechanical properties of the wood of the hybrid poplar. Telewski is collaborating with Frank Ewers to investigate possible trade-offs between mechanical strength and water conductivity in the wood of these hybrid poplars. He is also applying dendrochronology to study the rate of growth and response of both native and non-native trees growing in Michigan. Telewski is the author or co-author of numerous publications including: “A Unified Hypothesis of Mechanopreception in Plants” (2006, American Journal of Botany); Epperson, B.K., Willyard, A.M., and Telewski, F.W., “Chloroplast Diversity in a Putative Hybrid Swarm of Ponderosae” (2009, American Journal of Botany); and Kilgore, J.S. and Telewski, F.W., “Climate-growth Relationships for Native and Nonnative Pinaceae in Northern Michigan’s Pine Barrens” (2004, Tree Ring Journal). Among the courses Telewski teaches are Environmental Plant Physiology which discusses the interaction of plants and their environment and photobiology, thermophysiology, plant-water relations, thigmomorphogenesis, climate, salt stress, and drought tolerance. He also supervises the Botanical Gardens internship where he is interested in issues related to the care and documentation of plant collections in botanical gardens and arboreta.
Scope and Contents note
The Frank Telewski papers consist of two reports written by Telewski including "The Beginning of an Artificial Forestry in Mid 19th Century Michigan: The Contributions of W. J. Beal to Silviculture" and "The 120-Yr Period for Dr. Beal’s Seed Viability Experiment."
