Born in Toledo, Iowa in 1898, Donald Hayworth graduated from Grinnell College in 1918 and served in World War I as a private. After the war, Hayworth earned his M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1921 and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1929. Donald worked as a high school teacher in Oskaloosa, Iowa from 1921-1923, professor at Penn College in Oskaloosa, 1923-1927, professor at the University of Akron, 1928-1937, and at Michigan State University, 1937-1963. During World War II, Hayworth was in charge of the speaker’s bureau at the Office of Civilian Defense in Washington, D.C. from 1942-1943 and with the Interior Department working in relations with states on energy conservation from 1944-1946. After the war, Hayworth became owner of Plastic’s Manufacturing from 1950-1963 and began his political career. Hayworth served in the 84th Congress from January 3, 1955 to January 3, 1957, but lost his bid for reelection and subsequent elections after that. In the 1960s, Hayworth worked as a consultant for the Department of Agriculture, 1963-1964 and, and the Social Security Administration, 1965-1967. Hayworth continued to live in Washington D.C. until his death in February 25, 1982. (Biographical Directory of the United States Congress).
