Biographical Note
Clinton D. Smith was a graduate of Cornell University. He was a professor of Agriculture at Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) and in 1893 took over as head of the Department of Agriculture. He introduced the college’s first Short Course in the winter of 1894. In the fall of 1895, Smith was one of three faculty appointed to a committee by the State Board of Agriculture to investigate reasons behind the lack of popularity of M.A.C. Smith later accepted the presidency of Brazil’s first agricultural college.
Scope and Contents note
This collection consists of an annotated photocopy of one letter written by Clinton D. Smith to the Wheelers on November 29, 1902. Smith describes many of recent happenings on the Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) campus including the death of Robert Kedzie. He also mentions William J. Beal, Robert Shaw, Ulysses P. Henrick, and Levi R. Taft. Topics in the letter include changes in personnel, the cutting down of trees on campus and the personal lives of some of the faculty members.
