Biographical Note
Dorsey Read Rodney was born June 11, 1880. He graduated from West Point in 1903 and served in a variety of positions in the military, achieving the rank of Colonel. From 1930 to 1935, and again from 1943 to 1944, he served at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) as the head of the Military Science Program, and in 1944, he was appointed as the first Dean of MSC’s School of Business and Public Service. After retiring, he worked with several volunteer committees, such as Boy Scouts of America and the Red Cross. Rodney died on January 7, 1970.
Scope and Contents note
The papers of Dorsey Read Rodney contain one published copy of the “Reminiscences of Colonel Dorsey Read Rodney.” It was originally written in 1955 and recounts Rodney’s life up until that point. His family published the volume in 1988. Included in the memoirs are his early childhood, his time at West Point, his military appointments, his tenure at Michigan State, and his family life. The short foreword and epilogue give brief outlines of his life and fill in some of the gaps in the recollection as well as include some photographs. His insights into the changes in the military and the country in general, are noted as well as the general sentiments toward these changes.
