Biographical Note
John W. Donnell was born in Texas in 1902. He earned his B.S. in 1925 and M.A. in 1931 in Chemical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He came to Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1946 as an assistant professor in Chemical Engineering. He was an associate professor from 1947-1949, and in July 1949 appointed professor. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He retired from MSU in 1969 and passed away in December 1983.
Scope and Contents note
This collection consists of a volume entitled A Survey of Chemical Engineering Schools by John Donnell. He researched accredited Chemical Engineering departments at ten universities in order to help Michigan State University’s Chemical Engineering department become accredited. The ten schools were University of Missouri, Rolla School of Mines, Oklahoma A & M, Oklahoma University, Texas University, Texas A & M, Michigan School of Mining and Technology, University of Washington, Oregon State College, and California Institute of Technology. The volume contains pictures of the Chemical Engineering facilities and brief description as well as recommendations. There is a chart comparing various aspects of the schools. In the appendix there are two reports “Development of Chemical Engineering Education in the United States” by Albert Newman and “Qualifications for an Accredited Curriculum of Chemical Engineering” by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
