Biographical Note

John F. A. Taylor was born October 8, 1915 in Dallas, Texas to Charles B. Taylor and Mary Adams Taylor. He earned an A.B (1936) and a Ph.D. (1940) from Princeton University, and a L.H.D. from Lewis and Clark College in 1968. Taylor was hired by Michigan State College in 1946 as a professor and head of the Department of Literature and Fine Arts. He later became a professor of philosophy in the Department of Philosophy. He retired in 1983.

Taylor married Elizabeth Frost, with whom he had two daughters.

Scope and Contents note

This collection included a document titled "The Public Commission of the University: A Plan of Research Submitted to the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation by John F. A. Taylor, Professor of Philosophy, Michigan State University." Also included is a newspaper clipping quoting Taylor on the separation of universities from politics.
