Biographical Note

Fredrick Seaton Siebert was born on December 3, 1901 in Tower, Minnesota. He received his A.D. in 1923 from the University of Wisconsin. He received his J.D. in 1929 from the University of Illinois. He came to Michigan State University in 1957 to be the director of the journalism school, and held that post until 1960. From 1960 to 1967 he was the Dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. He taught until 1973 when he retired. Siebert was an expert in the field of press law and was a principle advisor for the United States’ 1976 copyright law committee. He died in 1982 in California.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains the report, An Analysis of University Policy Statements Dealing on Instructional Recordings and their Re-Use by Fredrick Siebert. It was written for the State University of New York. Also included is an autobiography by Siebert covering the years 1901 to 1979. The autobiography includes his time at Michigan State University.
