Biographical Note

Elinore Winburne was born Elinore Campbell McNichol on August 1, 1909 in Chicago. She married John Newton Winburne and had two children, Elinore and John. She attended the University of Colorado and earned two degrees, a B.A. in 1931 and a M.A. in 1934. Winburne taught high school English in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 1943-1945. She came to Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1945 as an instructor for the Department of Written and Spoken English. She became a temporary instructor in the Department of Communication Skills in 1952. In 1969, she became an instructor in the Department of American Thought and Language and in English in the Institute of Agricultural Technology. Winburne was not set to receive a pension because she never achieved the status of professor. She successfully fought this stipulation and in 1971 was able to retire with a pension from MSU.
