Biographical Note

Thomas Harris Osgood was born April 6, 1900 in Louth, England to Frederick William Osgood and Annie Dewar Harris. He earned a M.A. (1921) and B. Sc. (1923) from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, a M.S. (1927) from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. (1927) from the University of Cambridge, England. In September 1941 he became a professor and chair of the Department of Physics at Michigan State College. Osgood also served as the Director of the Mathematics and Physical Sciences division (1946-1959), the Dean of the School of Advanced Graduate Studies (1950-1959), and the Director of the Abrams Planetarium (1964-1969). He retired in July 1969.

Osgood was married to Dorothy Marston Osgood, and together they had two children. He died October 15, 1992 in East Lansing, Michigan.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of a cassette recording of a speech by Thomas H. Osgood (physicist) concerning his years with Ernest Rutherford as a research assistant, 1923-1925. The tape also contains an introduction on Osgood's academic career by Richard Schlegel. The recording was made on June 1, 1978.
