Historical Note
Tau Sigma was recognized by the faculty on December 3, 1923 as an honorary society for the applied sciences. Members were juniors and seniors and were chosen for excellence in scholarship, leadership, and character. In 1924, the Liberal Arts Division was organized, and in 1925, an agreement was reached to have an equal amount of members from each college. The number of students per division changed over time to reflect enrollment in each division. When the number of overall candidates became too large, the society began to select based on grade point average in the junior year. The GPA requirement was raised several times from 2.0 to 3.6. Activities included promotion of intellectual pursuits as well as service to the university. Tau Sigma continued on the campus of Michigan State University until 1984.
