Historical Note
Alpha Lambda Delta, the "first scholastic honor society for freshman women," was founded in 1924 at the University of Illinois. Maria Leonard, the Dean of Women at the University of Illinois, hoped to honor freshman women of high scholastic achievement at a time when many at the University felt that too much emphasis was being placed on athletics. In doing so, she founded Alpha Lambda Delta and became its first Grand President. Alpha Lambda Delta became a national organization in 1926, after Purdue University requested permission to establish a chapter. In 1976 the society published a booklet, titled "Fifty Years in Alpha Lambda Delta," to commemorate a half-century of encouraging and recognizing freshman women of high achievement.
A chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta was established at Michigan State University in 1957.
Scope and Content
The records of Alpha Lambda Delta contain two copies of the 1976 booklet, "Fifty years in Alpha Lambda Delta."
