Biographical Note

Francis (Frank) Hodgman graduated from Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in 1862. He remained active with the College and later became the first president of the Alumni Association. In addition to his works of poetry, Hodgman also wrote Manual of Land Surveying, which outlines the techniques and principles behind land surveying. He was an avid poet, often writing poems for new occasions, many of which he put to music. He died on November 22, 1907.

Scope and Content

This collection contains five books by Francis Hodgman: Early Days in Climax, The Hodgman Family, Home’s Sweet Harmonies, Songs by the Wandering Singer and The Wandering Singer and His Songs and Other Poems. Early Days in Climax was written in 1905 and outlines the history of the school houses in the area. There are also several illustrations in the book of different school houses. The Hodgman Family, 1903, is a partial genealogy of the family from 1663-1903. Home’s Sweet Harmonies is a book of music for either mixed voices or male voices published in 1899. Songs by the Wandering Singer is poems written by Hodgman and published about 1898. Lastly, The Wandering Singer and His Songs and Other Poems includes twenty-five of his poems with illustrations.
