Biography

Irma Thompson was born in 1880 in Van Buren County, Michigan. While she was still in high school, the Thompson family moved to Lansing so that Irma would have the opportunity to attend college. She entered Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in 1896 at the age of sixteen, to major in the Women’s Course. Although an off-campus student, she was very active in campus extra-curricular activities. She was class secretary, vice-president of the Art Club and a member of the Themian Literary Society. She was instrumental in establishing a comfortable and adequate lounge for other off-campus women. She graduated in 1900.

In 1905, she married Mark L. Ireland, Class of 1901, whose name appears occasionally on her dance programs.

The Irma Thompson papers consist of correspondence and memorabilia from her time as a college student including dance cards, programs for dances, and programs for events on campus. The events were held by various organizations including Feronian Society, Hesperian Society, Eclectic Society, Olympic Society, MAC Oratorical Association, Union Literary Society, as well as the alumni association. There are also a number of plays, poems and short stories written by Irma and other classmates and newspaper and magazine clippings. Also included are handwritten and typed “Memories,” telling of her acceptance to and years at Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University).

The collection also includes a scrapbook with photographs of campus, students, and student organizations. Of note is a photograph of the class of 1900 with identification of the people. The scrapbook also includes drawings Thompson did reflecting her time as a student. There is also an athletic event tickets, score cards for College Field Day events, and handbills for the College field day ball game, and a baseball game. In addition there are programs for events and dances, biographies, addresses, and correspondence with class members.

Also included is a hand-written collection of “Famous First Facts,” a Farmer’s almanac (1855) with handwritten notes and a “Family Almanac” (1900).
