Biographical Note
Herbert Baer, Jr. was born on May 12, 1922 in Buffalo, New York, to Herbert and Mabel Baer. He attended Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) during the 1941-1942 school year. In 1942 he volunteered for the Naval Medical Corps where he served in the Pacific Theater as corpsman and was a Pharmacist Mat 1/C (T) V-6. Baer separated from the Navy on December 17, 1945. He then attended St. Johns College in Annapolis, Maryland on the GI Bill and received a BA. He went on to the University of Buffalo for graduate school and met his wife, Joyce E. Smith (1931-2010). They married on September 12, 1953. Herber Baer, Jr. spent his career teaching English at Orchard Park (New York) High School. He and his wife had four children: Steven (1956), Glenn (1957), Ellen (1960) and Brian (1962, BS MSU 1984). Herbert Baer, Jr. passed away on November 28, 1987 in Buffalo, New York. Scope and Contents note
The Herbert Baer papers consist of letters Baer sent to his family during his freshman year at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University). In the letters he writes about his activities, events attended, his student job in the kitchen and a little bit about his classes. He also writes a little bit about World War II and mentions rationing.
