Biographical Note
Charles Henry Spurway was earned his B.S. in agriculture in 1914 and an M.S. in 1930 from Michigan State College. He became a research associate at the experiment station. His work focused on soil and its fertility for which he developed several tests. One example is the Soiltex kit which determines the lime requirements for a field to be planted with alfalfa.
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains Charles Spurway’s thesis on August Wilhelm von Hofmann which was written as an initiation requirement for Alpha Chi Sigma, a national chemistry fraternity. The thesis relates von Hofmann’s life as well as his contributions to chemistry. Von Hofmann’s research pertained mostly to organic chemistry; he enjoyed working with the bases in coal and the gas naphtha. A detailed bibliography is given at the end of the thesis.
