Biographical Note

Asher B. Abelow was trained at Michigan State College from July 1943 to April 1944 as part of the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). This program was designed to create soldiers with advanced training in areas such as veterinary medicine, foreign languages and engineering. The soldiers receiving this training were supposed to serve in the restoration of Europe after the war. Due to an acute shortage of ground troops, ASTP was disbanded in 1944 and most of the participants went on to serve in the infantry in Europe and the Pacific. At MSC, ASTP members were taught by instructors separate from the regular university professors. Although MSC students and ASTP trainees were not enrolled in classes together, ASTP soldiers participated in campus social activities and were housed in dormitories and fraternity houses. Mr. Asher lived in North Hall, a women’s dormitory and was a member of Company B, Section 8 or 9.
