Biographical Note
George Arnold Culp was born March 19, 1910 in Alanson, Michigan to Noah and Addlain Culp. He attended Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) from 1929-1933 and was a member of Scabbard and Blade, and ROTC. He graduated with a B.A. in Agriculture and Applied Science. After graduation, he was the assistant alumni secretary for two years. Culp then worked for Universal Credit Investment Trust in Detroit. In 1958, he became operating head of CIT Service Leasing Corporation, a subsidiary company. In 1965, he became president of that company. He was also Executive Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors of the parent company until his retirement in 1970. In 1941, Culp went on active duty with the army and became a colonel in the Artillery. He was in the service until 1946 when he resumed his civilian job. He remained on reserve duty until his 1970 retirement. In 1950, Culp married Aune Korhonen Batson. She had three children from a previous marriage: Judith, Trenton, and Bethanie. The Culps moved from Detroit to Long Island in 1951. There in 1952 their daughter Aune Beth was born. Mrs. Aune Culp passed away in 1969. In 1970, Culp married Jean Fay who passed away in 1973. In 1973, he moved to Clearwater, Florida where he owned and operated a Fanning Personnel Agency. In 1979, he had a stroke and moved in with his daughter in Tampa, Florida. He passed away on May 6, 1981.
Scope and Contents note
The collection contains two scrapbooks that George Culp made during his college years. They contain newspaper clippings, programs for athletic and other events, tickets for events, humorous drawings by James Trott, postcards of New York City, a ROTC certificate, a commencement program, and his diploma. The photographs include the band practicing, group shots, photos of West Point, his ROTC unit and shots of field training, interior views of a building, possibly the Hesperian Society house, and shots of graduation. Most of the photographs are unidentified.
The scrapbook pages were removed from their deteriorating leather binders. The scrapbooks contain paper that is in bad condition and dark patches on items where the glue permeated the paper. Also the glue has dried causing pieces to fall from the pages. As a result the scrapbooks were photocopied to show arrangement and order of the pages and ensure articles can be read in the future. In cases where there were booklets, the archivist photocopied the covers to their show location in the scrapbook. The researcher should consult the originals to read the whole booklet. There are also loose scrapbook photographs within the collection of the Michigan State University campus, mainly of its buildings.
The miscellaneous folder contains negatives of unidentified people and places, a short biography of Culp written by Judith Sponheim, a newspaper article, funeral notice and note card with image of a grave on it.
