Biographical/Historical Note

Elaine Harrison served as a volunteer for the celebration of the Michigan capitol building in Lansing on November 19, 1992. As a volunteer she was assigned to be a hostess during the celebration. On January 1, 1879 a new Capitol building was dedicated to the people of Michigan. This building was the third capitol building built and is currently still the one in use. On November 19, 1992 the capitol was rededicated after the completion of a three year long restoration project that would restore the capitol to its original Victorian style. The restoration reversed ageing, poor alterations, cheaply done past restorations, and daily damages. The month prior to the rededication celebration, the National Park Service named the capitol as a National Historic Landmark on October 5, 1992. The restoration project that was in process from 1989 to 1992 won national recognition and top awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The restoration process began after the Michigan Legislature established the Michigan Capitol Committee to oversee the project of the Capitol building.
