Biographical Note
Doyle K. Otto, son of Earle G. and Myrtle K., was born circa 1930 in Danville, Ilinois. Otto had a younger sister by the name of Erlene R. Otto. It is unknown when the Otto family moved to Michigan. Doyle attended Everett High School, located on the south side of Lansing, Michigan, in the mid- to late-1940s. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. From 1948 to 1951 he served in MacArthur's Army in Tokyo, Japan during the American occupation. Otto worked at the General Headquarters of Japan in the Counter Intelligence Section "handling confidential and secret documents."
Scope and Contents note
This collection contains the personal papers and memorabilia of Doyle K. Otto, who served with the U.S. Army in Japan following World War II from 1948 to 1951. There are a variety of photographs of different people and some negatives. Weekly schedules for his basic enlisted stenographic course over the course of several weeks are included. There are several greeting cards and letters to his parents from when Doyle was stationed in Japan. In the correspondence, Doyle writes about food, lodging, making friends with Japanese workers, and not getting paid in a timely fashion by the U.S. Army.
