Biography of Davis B. Hillmer

Born October 4 1896, Davis B. Hillmer was a well known commercial photographer in Detroit. In 1918, Hillmer joined the army and set up a photo laboratory at Camp Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1922, Hillmer started his own commercial photography business in Detroit that continued for fifty years until his retirement in 1972. Hillmer's main clients were J. L. Hudson Company, Hoskins Company, R. C. Mahon Company, and the Wyandotte Chemical Company. Hillmer died August 28 1979 in Plymouth, Michigan.

Scope and Contents note

The David B. Hillmer Collection contains 97 photographs primarily of Detroit buildings, street scenes, retail interiors, and retail window displays. J.L. Hudson Company comprises the bulk of the retail collection.
