Biographical Note

Ludell Cheney was born April 8, 1910 near Mason, Michigan. He and his brother Paul were members of one of the first three 4-H clubs organized in Ingham County in 1926. In 1927 and 1928 Cheney was on the county dairy judging team as well as the State Judging Team in 1928. In 1930, he was one of two people that represented Michigan at the National 4-H Camp in Washington D.C.

Cheney owned 300 acres that he farmed and kept dairy cows. He became a 4-H leader, served on the school board and held other positions in the community.

Cheney died on February 27, 1994.

Scope and Contents note

The Ludell Cheney papers contain materials about 4-H. The papers include newspaper clippings about Cheney and 4-H booklet called "Fun at the Meeting Place." There is also sheet music for two pieces called "A Plowing Song- 4-H Club Song for Boys" and "Dreaming- 4-H Song for Girls." Also included is a scrapbook Cheney created to submit for a 4-H Alumni Award in 1954. It includes descriptions of his time in the club, outline of a demonstration, radio talk, speech, as well as news clippings and photographs. There is also a panoramic photograph of 4-H club members, including Cheney, on the White House Lawn in 1930.
