Biographical Note
Henry A. Goodale was born in Berkshire, N. Y., October 8, 1823 to Chester and Sarah (Johnson) Goodale.
Goodale mustered in February 13, 1863 as an Assistant Surgeon in the 21st Michigan Infantry. At the Battle of Chickamauga he was captured by the Confederate troops, and for three months he was confined in Libby Prison. Upon being released he rejoined his regiment at Chattanooga, and accompanied them on the march to the sea. On April 11, 1865 he was promoted to the 11th Michigan Infantry as a Surgeon. He mustered out September 16, 1865, and honorably discharged.
After the War, Dr. Goodale owned a Drug store in Bay City, Michigan and practiced medicine. In 1869 he embarked in the drug business in East Tawas, Michigan (a branch of his Bay City business). In addition to the drug business and medicine, Dr. Goodale owned a farm six miles from East Tawas.
Dr. Goodale married Miss Mary Buell of New York who died in Genesee, Michigan, leaving one child. Dr. Goodale's second wife, Mary A. Davis was a native of Vermont. They had two children.
For many years, Dr. Goodale served as United States Pension Examiner.

Scope and Contents note
"From Murfreesboro to Chickamauga and Libby Prison" is a photocopy of a typed document, which was made from an original dictation of Dr. Henry Goodale's experience as a surgeon in the Civil War. Goodale served in the 21st Michigan Infantry. The events he described occurred between June 24, 1863 and November 24, 1863. The account tells of his experience in battle at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga; how he helped wounded soldiers both on and off the battlefield; and his time as a prisoner and release from Libby Prison. This has been scanned and placed online at http://civilwar.archives.msu.edu/collection/7-1C-20/goodale/.
Note: The copy given to the archives has the last sentence stating, "This account has been copied from the original which was dictated to Dr. Harry Goodale's granddaughter, Lillian Goodale." A more correct statement would be "...was dictated to Dr. Henry Goodale's granddaughter, Lillian Goodale." Henry Goodale's son was known as Harry (born 1886).
